Reinvent Your Living Space

There is nothing like a cozy, comfortable, and beautiful home to come back to after a long day at work. Home is certainly where the heart is, and that’s why it’s so important to design a living space that you truly love. Just a few small tweaks around the home can make all the difference when it comes to the overall look and feel of the space.

From designer lighting to plush throws, there are so many ways to upgrade rooms in the home that it can be a little overwhelming to figure out where to start. Check out some of the quickest and most affordable ways to make a big difference in your living space.

Perfect Pillows

Never underestimate the power of a perfect pillow! When it comes to the bedroom, only you will know the type, size, and style of pillow that is best for you. Spend a few hours in a home furnishings store to test out the different types that are available, and then make the best purchases for your needs. Invest in top quality pillows and you will be rewarded with a blissful night’s sleep.

You can place pillows and cushions throughout the rest of the home too. Living room sofas should have several cushions propped on them for when you are snuggling up to watch TV. You can even have different styles of pillows and swap them out as the seasons change for a simple way to alter the look of the living space without breaking the bank.

Beautiful Blankets

Add a little coziness to rooms with blankets and throws. Not only will the add an English cottage style look to the living room but they will also serve a practical purpose too. Choose blankets in colors that complement the decor of the room, add in some textured blankets to help bring the room to life, or use some patterned blankets to add a touch of modern chic to the home.

Creative types can use their skills to sew up a storm by making their own blankets, cushions, and pillows out of affordable fabric. All About You has a huge library of free sewing patterns for the thrifty soul. It’s also possible to save money on home furnishings, lighting, and accessories with discount vouchers and coupons near you.

Light It Up

Homeowners will spend thousands on buying the right furnishings, furniture, artwork, floor coverings, and accessories for the home, yet will often neglect the lighting. If you want to create the right ambience in the home, it’s essential that you install the best lights for the job.

A top tip is to use several different styles of lights in each room as well as dimmer switches so that you can adjust the lighting according to your mood. Hurricane candles and Chinese lanterns are lovely to have on hand when you want to create a romantic and intimate atmosphere without having to switch on a light. Twinkling wall lights and designer chandlers will help to add a touch of glamor and a lovely focal point to any room in the home. Pinterest has some spectacular interior lighting ideas that will help to get you inspired.

Natural light is one of the best types of lighting for your daytime activities, so make sure nothing blocks your windows. You can use mirrors to catch the light and make the space even brighter.

Maintain It!

While it’s lovely to decorate and update your home, damaged or dirty items already in the home can really bring down the look of the room. Broken items can also cause health and safety problems in the future.

Take a notepad and inspect each room for anything that needs work. Do you have a scruffy sofa? A leaking tap? A flickering light bulb? Many of these issues can be easily fixed, or you can hire a handyman to do they all the work for you in one afternoon. Proper maintenance is essential if you want to keep a beautiful showroom-esque home that is sure to wow guests.

Add a little style to your home by incorporating these tips into your living space. Have fun with it!

8 Creative and Fun Ways to Celebrate Dad’s Birthday

Do you want to celebrate dad’s birthday in such a way that he will never forget? Here are a few creative and fun birthday party ideas that will blow dad’s mind.

Throw a Theme Party from Dad’s Decade

clip_image002

Image via Flickr By Nick J Webb

If he is turning 40, then throw a party based on 1940s. Have all of your guests dress in 1940s style clothing, with a focus on Rosie the Riveter outfits, World War II styles, and bugle beads. For a 1950s event, throw a sock hop party or have a retro barbecue, and wear outfits inspired by the movie Grease. These parties can range from mild to wild, depending on the audience. Get great gift ideas for men to enhance the party, or keep the gifts contemporary for your guest of honor. These gifts will be remembered for years to come. It’s all about the experience.

Have a This Is Your Life Party

Have people from dad’s past, such as school teachers, grandparents, and friends, all tell stories about when they knew him. For those people who cannot attend in person, have a guest substitute help with the storytelling. Make the event humorous and fun, and turn it into a roast for your dad. If your guests are creative, have them include characters such as the ghost of Christmas past, favorite movies roles, or even the police in their stories. Just remember that this is a celebration of the best parts of dad’s life.

Celebrate a Milestone

Forty is a big birthday. Commemorate it with a mock funeral for dad. Have everyone dress in black. Ask guests to read eulogies mourning the loss of youth and the onset of old age. Sign him up for AARP. Rent a walker. Have guests dress like nurses. Supply gag gifts such as prunes and denture adhesive to make the event humorous. If this milestone birthday is more traumatic than funny for dad, use the event to show him how much life he has left.

Recreate a Movie

Take dad’s favorite movie and have his friends and family dress up as characters from the movie. Study a few lines, and then just ad lib. This can be a wonderful surprise party theme, too. Hit the clubs or go to dinner dressed as characters. It will draw attention to the guest of honor, and the world will help you celebrate, too. A few great possibilities for a movie theme dad will love include Star Wars, X-Men, and Captain America.

Design a Treasure Hunt

Make dad work for his party in a fun way. He has to find the party based on the clues you’ve left. If dad would rather let the party come to him, your treasure hunt can involve all of the guests. Ask everyone to assemble the clues to find dad. Have them check in on social media and post pictures along the way to create a fun account of what must be a wonderful birthday for dad.

Take a Trip

Take him someplace that he has always wanted to go. Have him scratch something off of his bucket list. Do something that is important to him. Visit the Grand Canyon, jump out of an airplane, learn to scuba dive in the Caribbean, or go on an eco tour. The possibilities are pretty much endless. Make it the trip of a lifetime, and let the focus be on him.

Celebrate with a Color Party

Make sure you know what dad’s favorite color is. If it’s green, then have a green party. If it is blue, have a cool blue-themed party. Have everyone dress the color, and make sure all of the food fits the theme. Get creative and oversaturate the festivities with his favorite hues.

Throw an Oscar Event

Have guests dress up as their favorite Hollywood star. Use door prizes and draw names as you read off the Oscar categories. Be sure to induct dad into the Hall of Fame. Have a guest give a speech about his life, focusing on all the roles dad has played. Celebrate dad and have fun.

Whichever theme you choose, be sure to go over the top. The more people who take part, the more fun the event will be. Rent decorations and costumes, and celebrate dad’s birthday in style.

Festive DIY Crafting for the Holidays

Are you entertaining at your home this holiday? These six DIY crafting ideas can keep décor costs down and create a lovely ambiance in your home.

Coffee-Filter Garland

clip_image002

Image via Country Living

Each year you may be accustomed to running holiday garland, popcorn, or wreaths about the fireplace, mantel, or stairwell. This year, change up your décor with new festive coffee filter garland. This is the perfect project for anyone who has converted over to single cup coffee brewers and have no use of their regular coffee filters.

Country Living has this beautiful garland piece created with white and natural colored coffee filters. However, you can dye your coffee filters with food coloring, just as with these coffee filter flowers, so your garland can match any color theme you have planned this year.

Sparkling Wine

If you enjoy hosting holiday parties, give each household guest a bottle of sparkling wine as their gift. This is not your ordinary drinking sparkling wine. This is a beautiful DIY decorated bottle with glitter on the outside. It’s fun, festive, and something they can keep out the entire year to decorate their home.

If you have many guests, select an inexpensive wine such as a Moscato. If the label can easily peel away, that’s best. You can use a clear glue and glitter; however, for roughly the same costs, you can purchase Mod Podge Sparkles. Using an applicator sponge, add the Mod Podge Sparkle to the bottle. Work in small sections, so you don’t smudge your bottle. Allow it to dry for 20 minutes. Add a ribbon and gift tag, and you have an unforgettable homemade gift.

Affordable Sparkling Ornaments

Another great and inexpensive way to decorate your home for the holidays are with sparkling ornaments. Grab a box of inexpensive bulbs, any size. Roll each bulb in Mod Podge Sparkle or glitter glue. Allow it to dry for 15 minutes before gluing floss, twine, or another type of string to the base of the bulb. Hang on your tree, line up a serving table, or decorate the fireplace with these sparkling ornaments. The sparkling ornaments shimmering off of the Christmas lights will bring a beautiful glow to your home. You can even use these bulbs year round to decorate for any holiday or celebration.

Decorate Under the Tree with Gifts

You don’t have to spend a fortune on decorative gift boxes or even expensive gift wrapping paper. Wrap the gifts in ordinary brown paper bags or other inexpensive wraps you may have. Now, decorate the outside of the boxes with decorative pieces found right in your backyard. Acorns, pinecones, and tree leaves all make beautiful décor and add a pleasant fragrance to your gifts. Secure them to the paper using hot glue. Consider putting a string of Christmas lights on your tree skirt to light up the gifts!

Fruit Ornaments

You may hang the same holiday ornaments up on your tree year after year. This year can be different, using your favorite fruits. Good Housekeeping presents this fun activity even the kids can help with. Baking these will add a wonderful aroma to your home.

Turn your oven to 150 degrees. Take your favorite fruits such as oranges, apples, pears, grapefruits, and lemons. Cut them crosswise into ½ inch to ¾ inch slices. Try to keep them uniform. Line them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place them in the oven and bake for four hours, turning every hour. Be sure to check on them as you don’t want them to dry out. Create a tiny hole in each piece and string brown or green twine through each. Enjoy hanging on your tree.

Fruit and Flower Centerpieces

If you want to wow your guests, be sure to have a beautiful table centerpiece. Once again, this does not need to be expensive. A DIY fruit and flower centerpiece is easily made with materials you probably already have in your home. Fill a clear glass vase with grapes, key limes, or raspberries. Then, place a bouquet of fresh flowers on top, protruding outside the vase. Add complementing garland such as mint leaves or baby’s breath around it.

The above six ideas are fun and easy DIY crafts for this holiday season. Although these are fun, there are several more unique ways to decorate. Check out ChristmasLightsEtc.com for ideas! Your guests will think you’ve worked hours on these projects, and only you know how easy and quick it really was.

6 Proven Tips on buying Second hand Furniture #DIY

$
0
0

I love old furniture. They have charm, character, history and an old world feel to them. Plus, they’re very well built. Even 50-60 year old wooden dressers can outlast the new replicas made in Malaysia or China. If you want quality furniture in your home, but are constrained by your budget, then buying second hand furniture maybe your best bet. But how can you tell if you’re getting a piece worth your time and extra money to refurbish? Here are a few tips to get you started so you’ll know whether to buy or walk away.

1. Hunt Aggressively

If you want quality used furniture, you have to be aggressive in your search and leg work because there are other people competing with you for whatever it is you have in mind. You’ll have to check the newspapers for estate sales, visit clearance sales, go online to Craigslist or eBay, thrift shop and frequent every yard sale and flea market in your immediate vicinity. If you get word of yard sales elsewhere, it’s a good idea to haul yourself there to check out the goods. Remember that extra inventory for old furniture is zero. What you fall in love with is probably the only stock they have, so you better move on it fast.

2. Come Prepared

If you’ve fallen head over heels for an old couch, but don’t have a way to haul it back home, tough luck. Some thrift shops can hold the item for you for a few days, but on others you simply have to have the wheels to take it home that very day. Yard sales pretty much can’t guarantee you anything, because the faster they can dispose of an item, the better. Also bring the dimensions of your space, your existing furniture, and carry a tape measure. Make sure you measure the item you plan on getting to check if it fits your current space. Check the height, width, length and depth so your new addition would fit perfectly with your old stuff.

3. Play CSI on the item

Imagine you’re a CSI and inspect every single nook and cranny of the item you plan on buying. Check for cracks, stains on the finish, scratches and dents. Check for signs of abuse, pet hair, gnawing marks and signs of woodworm infestation if you’re getting wooden furniture. If you’re getting a couch, check the foam cushion if it’s still re-usable and doesn’t crumble when you touch it. Smell the furniture if you can and if you’re comfortable. Be on the lookout for strong and pungent odors from pet urine and tobacco smoke because these odors take years to get out, if you can even get them out completely. Stay away from MDF furniture and items with Walmart or IKEA stamped on them.

4. Test It!

Yes, you have to test it for durability and strength issues. Don’t buy anything without ever testing it! You’d hate to be the owner of the most uncomfortable couch in the world, regardless if it’s second hand or brand new. If you’re buying a cabinet or a dresser, check the doors and the drawers for structural issues. Lean on tables and see if there’s any give. Sit on the couch and on the chair you have your eye on. Don’t lie down on the bed with a mattress though. Never buy a used mattress because these will certainly have germs, bacteria, bodily fluid and even bed bugs! Don’t even go near old mattresses unless you want to take home the critters with you!

5. Can you handle it?

Make sure you have the time and resources to work on the project. Do you have DIY skills or will you have to hire someone to do it for you? Factor in the cost of refurbishing an item and see if you’ll be paying more in the long run. Some projects need a lot of love and a lot of work. Be sure you can handle both. Solid wood furniture makes for an excellent DIY project because they’re easy to do, even for beginners. All you need is a little time, sand paper, wood stain or varnish and some rudimentary DIY skills to get the job done.

6. The Price has to be Right

Lastly, one of the main reasons you’re buying second hand furniture in the first place is you don’t have the budget for brand-spanking new furniture, so you have to be smart about your purchases. They have to be fair and reasonable. If a particular piece is priced too high, negotiate to lower the price. Ask yourself if what you’re about to buy is worth your time, effort and money.

Visualize the piece in your house. If it looks great in your mind’s eye and you have a gut feeling about it, go for it. Just make sure to follow the tips above so you won’t be stuck with a project you don’t like.

Art + Science = Pure Boy Fun With RoseArt Graphic Skinz

We received samples.

I’m learning more about what my son likes now that I’m here in LA. I’m really trying to connect with both my kids, talking to them every day and making sure that what we are doing is making them happy. My son had his birthday the same time that RoseArt sent me a fairly new product to review. We’ve actually had one of our reviewers Heather review it before. She reviewed the Graphic Skinz Design Studio for her daughter. We are focusing on the boy element of the Graphic Skinz and it was a huge hit.

image

I gave the set to my son for his birthday and he had to start making the gorilla right away. I told him I had to put it together firs and it was hard for him to wait. I got the water chamber together and explained to him this is going to work like a vaccum and it will suck all the water out while making the art stick to the plastic objects.

image

Graphic Skinz is basically a way to apply a custom “skin” (similar to a temporary tattoo) to any water safe object. The product comes with a chamber (for applying the skins), some figurines, patterned skins and more. But the real magic happens when you start to skin your own stuff: cell phone cases, light switch covers, etc.

image

I never realized that he liked art so much, or rather, I knew he liked to draw but the crafty stuff was always his sister. Plus this is kind of educational. Like I said, I was able to explain to him how a vacuum worked and that the paper was going to turn out really colorful like it did. He loved it.

More about the set we received:

  • Customize and create like never before with the Graphic Skinz Design Studio
  • Motorized Vacuum Chamber —applies graphic skinz in seconds
  • Includes 30 Graphic Skinz in bold colors and unique patterns
  • 3 customizable models—Monster Truck, Creepy Spider and Ferocious Shark—all ready for you to skin!
  • The cylindrical sponge allows you to apply graphic skinz to 3-D objects
  • The sponge detailer gives your creations 360-degrees of skinz coverage
  • A detailed instruction sheet provides all necessary steps so you can create a masterpiece!

The Robotic Ape (is what I called the gorilla above)

  • Robotic Ape design pack includes 1 large customizable model that easily snaps apart and back together
  • Four 4”x4” and Eight 2”x4” Graphic Skinz in a variety of bold and bright patterns
  • An easy-to-follow instruction sheet makes skinning a breeze
  • Design Packs are created to be used with the Motorized Vacuum Chamber (sold separately)

We also received extra skinz.

image

I didn’t realize at first that he could make change to it. I told him not to put the gorilla pieces back in the chamber but after further reading I found that you can. You can layer as many skinz on top of each other as you want. Here’s how you do this. You take what you want to put a skinz on and you cut the skinz to match the object’s shape and size. Then you place the yellow sponge (wet of course) around the object you have attached the skinz to. Then you turn on the chamber (after you close the lid) and press the button for 20 seconds or until all the water is sucked out and viola! You have your new really cool toy to play with that you designed!

DIY: How to Make Valentines & Envelopes with Scotch Duct Tape Craft

$

0

My kids and I had an opportunity to do Duct Tape crafts and we found that it’s quite fun to make your own products out of Duct Tape is it Duck Tape or Duct tape. I think it’s Duck Brand Duct tape but most people just call it Duck tape now. We ended up making a little hand bag, ties, and head bands. It was so much fun. You can use Duck Tape to make purses, ties for Father’s day and you could probably make a shirt if you took the time. I’m not sure how comfortable it would be but the ideas with Duck Tape crafts is endless. Since it’s almost Valentine’s Day, we thought we should share some Duct Tape Valentines, AKA Duck Tape Valentines.

Duck Tape Valentines

Duck Tape Valentines

So this can be entirely made with Duct Tape. Or you can gather some card stock and just enhance it with the tape.

Supplies needed:

Multiple Color Duct Tape

(Patterned Duck Tape)
Sharpies

To Make the Cards:

Lay one piece of duct tape flat on the board. Now layer a second one so that it overlaps with the first one between a quarter and an eighth of an inch. Continue until you’ve reached a size that works for you. We did about four rows of duct tape.

Then when you have a solid sheet you can just decorate it as you choose with angles and shapes cut out of Duct Tape.

When you want place a solid color in the middle where you can write a message or a name to personalize the Valentine.

To Make The Envelopes:

How to Make Duck Tape Valentines Using Duct Tape

Lay one piece of duct tape flat on the board. Now layer a second one so that it overlaps with the first one between a quarter and an eighth of an inch. Continue until you’ve reached a size that works for you. We did about six rows of duct tape.

How to Make Duck Tape Valentines Using Duct Tape

Turn the sheet over. Use a couple rolls of tape to hold down the corner if needed. Time for the second layer, or envelope liner. Do the same exact thing but going in an opposite direction. This will ensure that your duct tape sheet doesn’t roll into a tube. Once you’re done, trim the excess tape off the edges.

Measure the size you need based on your card or whatever is going in inside. For our first envelope, we used one of our pop-up name cards. Cut the sheet so that it’s about half an inch wider than the card and about three times the height.

clip_image001

From the bottom, measure and draw out a triangle. Cut it out. Mimic a similar triangle for the top flap, but slightly larger. Now you’re done!
